During routine benthic observations, an environmental anomaly was recorded approximately four kilometers from the shore at a depth of seven meters. An area of the seabed, previously undocumented in research on this region, was discovered. It is likely that changes in the system of sea currents created conditions favorable for the intensive growth of organisms.
The resulting structures and formations have given rise to a distinctive ecosystem, shaped by adaptation to prevailing conditions. The fauna and flora of this place resist easy classification – their arrangement, coloration, and texture emerge as the outcome of specific environmental processes.
The project Specimen X uses the language of the documentary costume as a tool for interpretation and speculation, offering an artist’s interpretation of the phenomenon “identified” near Sopot. The photographic image functions as a form of “evidence”, while simultaneously inviting us to question our need to name and categorize the world. The depths remain a realm of mystery and ambiguity, still eluding the full reach of science and technology.
This series emerged from an artist residency held during the FFWRS "W Ramach Sopotu" photography festival and was later presented at HABITAT - one of the main exhibitions at the National Art Gallery in Sopot, Poland.
